Slotting Cutters
Slotting cutters create narrow grooves, splines, panel slots and joinery features in wood, MDF, plywood and cabinet parts. They are useful for frames, panels, fixtures and repeat groove work when the slot must match a spline, panel or hardware component.

Choose the slot before the cutter

Slot width: match the cutting width to the part that will fit in the groove.
Diameter and depth: check the cutter diameter, required cut depth and machine clearance.
Arbor or shank: confirm the holder, arbor, spacer and guard arrangement before ordering.
Material: verify that the product is suitable for the wood, MDF, plywood or board being machined.

Setup and test cut
Use stable workholding and a fence, guide or programmed path that keeps the slot aligned. Make a test cut in matching scrap, measure the finished width and depth, and check the mating spline or panel before routing production parts. Several shallow passes can help control heat and chip clearance when the setup permits them.

Common questions
Should the slot width equal the hardware width? Start from the actual mating part and allow only the clearance needed for the intended fit.
Can I use a slotting cutter on a handheld router? Only when the cutter, guard, arbor or shank and router manufacturer instructions allow that setup. Confirm the machine capacity before use.
