CNC Router Bit Flute Types: Upcut vs Downcut vs Compression

CNC router bit flute direction affects chip evacuation, edge finish and hold-down behavior. The most common choices for wood, MDF and plywood are upcut, downcut and compression spiral cutters. The right option depends on the material, cut type, workholding and which face of the panel needs the cleanest edge.

Chip packing can become a concern in deeper slots or pockets, so use a suitable cutting strategy and do not assume one flute direction fits every operation.

Compression CNC router bits

Compression cutters combine upcut and downcut geometry. Their purpose is to reduce breakout on both faces during suitable through-cuts in sheet materials. The location where the flute direction changes matters: confirm that the cut depth and material thickness allow the compression section to work as intended before machining finished panels.
